Our Story

By Will Mooney

In 2007 I found myself at the beach with a mouth full of ulcers. I had been given everything I needed. I was newly married. I knew all the “right answers.”  The ministry work was growing.  Everyone was telling me I was doing great. However, under the surface trying to be all things to all people was killing me and those I love. I could not pray, work, read or think my way out of my anxiety, shame and pornography addiction. I googled “sex addiction therapist near me” and began the scary ride of reconnecting to my heart’s feelings, needs and longings for the first time. Over the next several years, it was a rough road. I thought a few books and therapy sessions would be enough. I brought to my recovery the same strategies I used to protect myself from being known by others and God, and being with myself. But it was only through opening myself up to the fierce kindness and bold curiosity of others that I began to discover the healing power of being known and courage to step into how I was made.

After years of pastoral ministry, graduate school and working part time as a counselor, I decided to trust my desires and devote myself to the meaningful labor of offering the same bold love and healing presence that so many have given to me as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Living fully and honestly with myself, others and God is a journey that is never finished. It is one I will always be on. We are not made to do this alone. The mission of providing genuine help, in a sacred space, compelled by love and encompassed by faith, requires patient collaboration. Thankfully, God has continued to bring other therapists in my path that share this same vision and passion to be a part of a therapeutic community that values the same authenticity and connection that we invite our clients into. It was through these connections and shared mission that in the fall of 2022 Made and Matter Counseling was formed to partner together to become who we are made to be and give what we are made to give.

Our Purpose

Made and Matter Counseling exists as a space of engagement, where through collaborative process, with contagious courage, by intentional encounter, we partner together to become who we are made to be and give what we are made to give.

Our VIsion

Made and Matter Counseling envisions a world warm with open-heartedness, rich with safe connection, deep with self-understanding, bold with honest love, and expectant of divine surprise

Our particular focus

Made and Matter Counseling is genuine help for real humans, in a sacred space, compelled by love, encompassed by faith, through individual, couples, family and group therapy, speaking, and training, with empathic attention to relationships, trauma, spiritual issues, addiction, anxiety and depression.

Our theory of change

Our therapeutic approach flows out of the belief that we are all made to live fully in relationship with ourselves, others and God. However, to live fully means it is inevitable that we will experience loss and pain. In response to this, many of us shut off our hearts in order to survive. This self-protective move has rippling effects into every other aspect of our lives and relationships.

We believe counseling is a space of engagement, where through collaborative process, with contagious courage, by intentional encounter, we partner together to reconnect to our heart’s feelings, needs, longings and desires so that we can begin to live more fully as we are made and give more fully wherever we are. This involves looking at who we are, what happened to who we are, what we did with what happened to us and where do we want to go now.

Our counseling is informed by mind and body somatic research on trauma, psychodynamic, attachment and family systems theories, as well as what we have learned through our own recovery of heart.

Our Values

Approachable Openness

In tenacious commitment to our own humility, we will be open to our clients, open to each other, open to feedback and open to our neighbors.

Bold Curiosity

In humble recognition of everything we have to learn, we will eagerly attend to our and others’ stories both beautiful and bitter, motivations both virtuous and dark, and growth both inward and outward.

Warm Differentiation

In rich celebration of what makes each of us us, we will persistently carry ourselves as distinct persons, embracing our differences, our responsibilities, and our power.

Tender Clarity

In genuine appreciation for our need for honest transparency, we will steadfastly pledge to the setting of goals, establishing or expectations, and respecting of limits.

Faithful Engagement

In bewildered gratitude for divine presence, we will undertake to engage our work with our faith with creativity, improvisation, and anticipation.

Courageous Welcome

In glad embrace of our need for belonging, we will faithfully extend ourselves in kind hospitality to our team, our clients, and our neighbors.

Meaningful Labor

In resolute acknowledgement of the gift of our vocation, we will regularly remind ourselves and each other of the rich significance of our work lovingly done, and of the long impact we have in the lives of our clients.

Patient Collaboration

In acceptance of the design of our human limits, we will firmly commit to be with and for each other, recognizing that we can do what one of us cannot, and that all of us are better when we think and work together.
